Is Faith a Gift?
IF faith is a gift - WHAT then is unbelief - a debt? If on the one hand, God credits righteousness to men who believe; and if on the other hand unbelieving hearts are regarded as "evil" - what is the true implication for us? John wrote -"Even after Jesus had done all these miraculous signs in their presence, they did not believe in him." Does this suggest that all that Jesus had done before them was to enable them to believe? If so, then His gracious works were the reason their unbelief response was sin! Is this why Jesus said to them - "If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have sin, but now they have no excuse for their sin.?" Since unbelief is reckoned "evil" and "sinful" - does this not imply that God's will for every man is "to believe!" Does He not make faith possible to all men by providing ample evidence through creation and the gospel of Jesus? Yes! God's grace has appeared to every man, and His word has been heard in every language. The implication for us in this truth is that faith is not a gift - IT IS A COMMAND! We can either choose to obey and live, or disobey and die! All men must repent of unbelief and choose to believe the gospel! Those who choose the obedience of faith will live. Those who reject the truth and follow an unbelieving evil heart will die. The message in Creation and the gospel of Jesus Christ must be believed unto righteousness! Refusal to believe the message of God is evil and sinful. Just as sure as "all things are possible to him who believes", it is equally a reality that the man who does not believe is a double minded and unstable in all his ways; he will receive nothing from The Lord - except judgment upon his unbelief. What James said then is just as true for us now - "we must believe and not doubt"! Without faith it is impossible to please Him, for those who come to Him MUST BELIEVE! The Spirit and the Bride say COME! And let those who hear say COME! And let all who come BELIEVE! Whosever BELIEVETH on Him shall not perish (like those who believe not) but will have everlasting life!
