Whose Got Your Back?

Whose got your back?  We all appreciate it when a faithful friend expresses his/her commitment by affirming - "hey, Don't worry - I've got your back!"

It has been a great comfort to me that one of the Lord's promises is that His goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life  - "He has my back!"  Too often I have failed to see my error or sin till after the fact.

Someone has been hurt, a trouble has arisen, and the enemy of my soul has been given an occasion to use against me.    How comforting it is to know that even if trouble is chasing me from behind - goodness and mercy have my back.

Sadly,  I have often unwittingly stepped into snares that the enemy set for me.  The accuser of the brethren is always ready to take advantage of my every misstep; yet,  whenever he attempts the sneak attack of bringing up my past -  (digging up dirt) goodness and mercy have my back.

Like faithful friends,  they remind me not to look back but to fix my gaze in front of me and look to The Lord whose mercies are new every morning.

They encourage me to press closer to the Good Shepherd and to keep in step with Him.
Knowing that goodness and mercy are following me is a tremendous comfort, because they prevent my past sins from overtaking me from behind.

They have those sins covered, and they refuse to allow the accuser of the brethren to sneak up from behind.

When goodness and mercy see a friend who is in genuine need of reconciliation with me, they recognize the need and opportunity for me to humble myself and let that person  through.  When it's  the accuser of the brethren trying to disguise himself as someone wanting to speak with me - goodness and mercy see right through the scheme and prevent me from being detained.

I am learning what David meant when he wrote -"I will fear no evil - for Thou art with me."  The Lord goes before me  and even when He takes me through those difficult places  where it's not safe to even try to look back - I need not be afraid - goodness and mercy have got my back!
