Paul
prayed that "our love would abound more and more unto a full
knowledge and depth of insight so that we will approve things that
are EXCELLENT in order that we might be sincere (living in full
SONlight) and not stumble unto the day of Christ, having been filled
with the fruit of righteousness."
Spiritual discernment goes
beyond distinguishing between the good and bad - true insight
discerns the difference between the good and BEST!
What is good for
the soul is not necessarily best for the spirit. Provisions appealing
the flesh may actually be grievous to the spirit. FULL Sonlight will
clarify the true fruit of the light - those things that consist of
"goodness, righteousness, and truth."
Beware the carnal
corruption hidden in the shadows. All of us have put on an article of
clothing in low light settings only to see the large stain later on
once we came into greater lighting.
Paul realizes that we can
inadvertently corrupt ourselves by lack of sound discernment. Our own
choices can pollute our spirit by feeding our flesh. If we are to
make NO PROVISION for the flesh, we will profit greatly to learn that
some FOOD FOR THE SOUL is SOUR TO THE SPIRIT.
We have been given a
RESPONSIBLE LIBERTY - and it is our responsibility to exercise our
liberty not for an occasion to the flesh but as an opportunity to
serve others. We are never free to feed our flesh. Lusts cry out for
our attention, but serving our lusts is slavery - NOT FREEDOM!
