Rumination and Resting
Ruminating and Resting are the result of being "filled"! It's spring here, and the pastures are a rich green again. I drive a school bus on a rural route, and I began to notice that many cows were now lying down, especially in the afternoon. I wondered to myself why are more of them lying down? Then the thought occurred to me "He makes me to lie down in green pastures." I looked it up on line and sure enough - cows "ruminate" and "rest" when their first stomach is FULL!
Green pastures make it much easier for cows to fill up, lay down, and enjoy what they have eaten. It's hard to rest when your empty, and it's not easy to fill up on winter pasture or in drought conditions. This is why Jesus said "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they will be filled." The Good Shepherd leads us in "paths of righteousness" to those rich, green pastures where we are filled, lie down, and find rest for our souls. "The fruit of righteousness is peace, and the effect of being filled with His righteousness is tranquility and confidence." The wicked have no such rest because they can never be satisfied by what they are taking in. Only those who seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness find the rest for their souls that Jesus promised.
Those who pursue righteousness will find rest! The result of being filled with Christ's righteousness is rest for our souls. The more we follow after the Good Shepherd , the sooner we find the green pastures and are filled. The more we ruminate upon His words of spirit and life, the sweeter our rest will become. Ruminating upon the richness of His righteousness results in sweet rest for our souls. Those who hunger and thirst after righteousness shall be filled, lie down in green pastures, ruminate, and rest!
